Cabinet Approves New Global Tender to Strengthen Liquor Security Stamp System

Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved a fresh international tender process to implement a new liquor security stamp system, marking another step in the Government’s efforts to strengthen regulation and monitoring within the alcohol industry. The move comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding transparency, tax collection, and the prevention of counterfeit alcohol products in the market.

According to reports, the proposed system is expected to introduce enhanced security features and digital tracking mechanisms for liquor and liquor-based products distributed in Sri Lanka. Authorities believe the initiative will help improve excise revenue collection while also supporting efforts to combat illicit alcohol trade and unauthorized distribution.

The decision to call for a fresh global tender follows previous concerns and scrutiny over earlier security sticker procurement processes. Industry stakeholders have closely monitored developments surrounding the implementation of security labels, particularly due to their direct impact on manufacturers, distributors, and retail operations within the licensed alcohol sector.

The Excise Department is expected to oversee the tender process and subsequent implementation phases once a suitable international service provider is selected. Further details regarding timelines, technical specifications, and operational rollout are anticipated in the coming months.
