Upholding Discipline at Inter-School Cricket Tournaments: A Police Advisory

Inter-school cricket tournaments in Sri Lanka are not just about runs, wickets, and school pride , they are a celebration of tradition, teamwork, and youthful energy. Every year, schoolchildren, parents, and alumni gather in vibrant, colorful crowds, cheering for their teams and showing school spirit.

However, the Sri Lanka Police have issued a strong advisory, reminding everyone that this excitement must be accompanied by responsibility, discipline, and respect for public order. How you behave during these tournaments reflects directly on your school’s reputation.

Key Guidelines for Students and Parents

Police have urged participants to:

  • Conduct yourselves with dignity, avoiding excessive shouting or public disturbances.

  • Avoid fights, disputes, or provocations with students of other schools.

  • Follow safety rules during vehicle parades and be cautious when traveling in trucks, lorries, or other vehicles.

  • Never drive without a valid license or under unsafe conditions.

Most importantly, authorities emphasized a strict ban on illegal substances. Possession or use of narcotics, illicit drugs, cigarettes, or other prohibited substances inside stadiums or during related events will result in strong legal action. Social media misuse, such as posting offensive or hateful content to provoke rival schools, is also under scrutiny.

Parents are encouraged to:

  • Closely monitor their children’s activities and whereabouts.

  • Ensure their children return home safely and on time.

  • Exercise extra responsibility when providing vehicles for parades or celebrations.

Inter-school cricket is about pride, teamwork, and lifelong memories ,not accidents, arrests, or regret. By following these guidelines, students, parents, and alumni can ensure that every match is safe, fun, and a true celebration of school spirit.
