Concerns Raised Over Substandard Toddy Distributed at Election Rallies

With the Presidential Election date is getting closer, Election monitors have raised concerns over the distribution of substandard toddy to estate workers by local politicians to boost attendance at candidates’ election rallies.

According to Manjula Gajanayake, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies (IRES), this tactic is a clear violation of election laws. He reported multiple complaints that substandard bottled toddy has been freely distributed at political rallies ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election, which has negatively impacted workers’ attendance and productivity.

At a recent media briefing in Colombo, Gajanayake noted that estate administration officials, including superintendents, had lodged complaints about this issue. He urged authorities, including the Police, to act swiftly as the distribution of such beverages contravenes election laws and the Tobacco and Alcohol Act.

Gajanayake also highlighted the potential health risks and long-term effects on the plantation workforce, calling for health department intervention.
