Liquor Outlets to Remain Closed for New Year Holidays

Liquor outlets across Sri Lanka will remain closed on April 13 and 14 in view of the upcoming Sinhala and Hindu New Year.

The Excise Department has announced that this closure applies not only to liquor stores but also to licensed establishments including bars, pubs, restaurants, and hotels that serve alcohol.

The measure is part of the country’s annual observance of “dry days” during significant cultural and religious occasions. The Sinhala and Hindu New Year is one of the most important festivals in Sri Lanka, traditionally marked by family gatherings, religious observances, and cultural rituals.

Authorities have stated that strict action will be taken against any individual or establishment found violating the directive. Excise officers will conduct inspections islandwide to ensure compliance during the two-day period.

The temporary closure aims to maintain the cultural and traditional significance of the New Year while encouraging a more mindful and respectful celebration.

Liquor outlets are expected to resume normal operations following the conclusion of the holiday period.
